Vacuum excavation is ideal for use in London. Vacuum excavation, or suction excavation, is quicker, safer, and more convenient than manual excavation. Many sites in London are in densely populated areas, with many utilities running underground, suction excavation allows for a safe and efficient method of working. Suction excavation uses powerful machines to remove ground material, saving you time and money. Our dedicated teams work across London providing an affordable and professional service to companies and individuals. Whether you need a site safely cleared for development, or a tunnel digging for drainage purposes, at PIER UK we bring our dedication and professionalism to every job that we undertake.

About PIER (UK)

PIER UK was founded in 2001 as a civil engineering company. Working on many major drainage projects, we first used suction excavation in 2009. The senior team was so impressed with the speed and safety provided by using this type of excavation machinery that we invested in our own machinery so that we could focus on providing our clients with safe and efficient excavation services. With our background as civil engineers, we bring our knowledge and understanding to each project that we work on. We not only invest in our machinery, to ensure that we have the latest excavators in our fleet, but also in our people. Our teams are trained and accredited across leading civil engineering authorities such as Safe Contractor and FORS. We are up-to-date with the latest regulations and ensure that all projects that we carry out are compliant. We are committed to providing a high standard of service to each of our clients, and indeed many of our clients are repeat customers, trusting us to deliver an excellent service on time and on budget.

Why Do You Need A Vacuum Excavator for Your Project?

Vacuum excavators are cheaper and safer than traditional excavation methods. Using a vacuum excavator reduces the risk of cable strikes which can be dangerous and expensive. It is estimated that there are around 60,000 cable strikes per year, and the costs incurred by these vary according to the utility that is affected. For example, a power cable strike is more expensive than a telecom strike, and the associated costs can quickly spiral, depending on the repercussions of the strike. Using a suction excavator is also cheaper when the costs per cubic metre are compared. Machinery can clear far more quickly than traditional manual excavation, reducing the cost of the project. Choosing to use an excavator is the best choice for your next project.

How Does Vacuum Excavation Work?

Excavators are used for different types of work, and we will always accommodate your schedule to ensure that we can work with you on your project. Where we are working on the drainage of new sites or large-scale developments, we can book your project with plenty of notice. If you need us in an emergency, such as a tunnel or drain collapse we will be there. We have the capability within our fleet to handle projects of varying sizes and complexity. Your project will be expertly managed by our skilled team, ensuring that you have the best excavator for your needs and that your project is carried out promptly and professionally. Whilst many customers use our trained operatives to operate the excavator, we can provide machinery hire, with training so that your own team can operate the excavators. We aim to always provide an excellent service at an affordable rate. Suction excavation costs £44 per cubic metre when compared to manual excavation which costs £75 per cubic metre, making it the best solution for your excavation requirements.

FAQs

What is the daily productivity of a vacuum excavator?
This is all dependent on the ground conditions, but it is approximately 1.6m3 to 2.5m3 per hour.

Do you have different sized systems available?
Yes. With a hire fleet of over 50 vehicles, we have 16t, 26t and 32t wheeled systems, and a 21t tracked unit for those difficult to reach areas.
Is there an additional cost for the disposal of the excavated material?
We do not dispose the excavated material, this is stockpiled at your designated location on site. This will allow for the material to be re-used at your own discretion/costs.
Where does the unit discharge the excavated material?

A standard unit (26/32T) and our Tracked unit (21T) will tip to the side of the unit and the city sucker (16T) will tip to the rear.

How much material can a vacuum excavator hold?

Our larger vehicles have an 8m3 – 10m3 capacity, whereas the City Suckers has 2m3 capacity and our tracked vac has 4.5m3 capacity.

What areas do you cover?

We cover the whole of the UK.

What days and times are your vacuum excavators available to hire?

Our fleet of vacuum excavators are available for hire 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Do you only provide operated hire?

No. We also provide self-drive hire, with full training for your operatives.

Are your operatives trained and accredited?

All our operatives are CPCS trained and fully accredited.

How does the system deal with stubborn or compacted material?

All our systems are fitted with an air lance that our operators will use to displace and break-up material. The air lance is powered by the onboard compressor.

Do you supply extension pipework?

Yes, at an additional cost.

How old are your vacuum excavators?
More than 18 of our excavators are under four years old, which makes our fleet one of the most modern in Europe.
What is the total reach of the power arm?
Approximately 4.5 metres from the rear/nearside of the truck.
What is the diameter of the suction hose?
The suction hose has a 250mm (10”) diameter.
Can the diameter of the suction hose be reduced?
Yes. We can provide a suction nozzle adaptor to reduce to 150mm (6”) if required.
How much does it cost to hire a vacuum excavation truck?
The average cost of suction excavation per day is £1,100, but we quote for each project on an individual basis so speak to us today about your project.
Can vacuum excavation be used in both urban and rural environments?
We have different excavators for rural and urban environments so that you can have the ideal excavator for your project.
What are the limitations of vacuum excavation?
Excavators can work to a depth of 20 metres, and the amount of material that can be excavated will depend on the capacity of the excavator. We will always advise on the best type of excavator for your project requirements.
Are there any noise or vibration concerns with vacuum excavation?
Vacuum excavators are often used due to the minimal disturbance that they cause. Whilst there is some noise from the machinery, it is a sensitive excavation method that reduces the effect on the local environment.
Can vacuum excavation be used for landscaping projects?
Excavators can be used on any projects where earth and such materials need to be removed, this can include landscaping projects.
What kind of documentation is required before and after a vacuum excavation project?
We have an in-house health and safety manager, who will work with you to provide risk assessments. These are essential for excavation projects. We can also discuss any other documentation that you require.
How many systems are in your fleet?

We have over 50 vacuum excavation vehicles in our hire fleet, but it will continue to grow to meet demand.
